Abstract:

Background & Aims of the Study: The aim of this study was to determine the ecology of malaria vectors in order to select the vector control masseur in the future. This study was carried out on trend of malaria cases and malaria vectors in Saravan county, Sistan & Baluchestan Province, Iran. Materials & Methods: The adult mosquitoes were collected by standard Pyrethrum space spray collection and larvae by dipping method twice a month in 2011 for 12 months. Samples were identified by systematic keys. The 5-year epidemiological data was collected from Malaria Control Centre, Iranian Ministry of Health and Medical Education. Results: Four Anopheles species identified including; Anopheles (Cellia) stephensi Liston, Anopheles (Cellia) dthali Patton, An. (Cellia) culicifacies Giles, An. (Cellia) fluviatilis James. Anopheles stephensi was predominant species whereas An. fluviatilis was the lowest species in adult collection. A minimum temperature of larval habitat was 14ºC for An. fluviatilis and maximum was 26°C for An. stephensi. Monthly peak activity of An. stephensi larvae found in April and October and in adult form found in May and October. Monthly peak activity of An. culicifacies larvae found in June and September whereas observed in July and November for adults. An. dthali larvae collected more in September and November whereas Adult form found more in July and November. The number of malaria cases between 2007 to 2011 showed the decrease in first 4 years and then increase in the last years. Conclusions: The dominant species was An. stephensi comprised 54.07% of larvae and 49.16% of adults. We suggest studying on biological forms of this species with specific focus on the bordering areas between Iran and Pakistan in the future.

Seasonal Abundance and Host-Feeding Patterns of Anopheline Vectors in Malaria Endemic Area of Iran

Seasonal abundance and tendency to feed on humans are important parameters to measure for effective control of malaria vectors. The objective of this study was to describe relation between feeding pattern, abundance, and resting behavior of four malaria vectors in southern Iran. This study was conducted in ten indicator villages (based on malaria incidence and entomological indices) in mountain...

Malaria Endemicity Effect on Incidence and Mortality Rate of COVID-19 in Some Malaria-Endemic Regions of Iran; An Ecological Study (2020-21)

Background: According to recent reports during the COVID-19 pandemic, malaria-endemic regions have a significantly lower COVID-19 case and mortality rate than those malaria-non-endemic.  This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of COVID-19 in malarious areas of southern Iran and the incidence of disease in people previously infected with malaria. Materials and Methods: We conducted an ecolo...

An overview and mapping of Malaria and its vectors in Iran

Introduction: In spite of public health level improvement in Iran, Malaria is still an important health problem in the southeast corner of the country. Mapping distribution of endemic diseases with their relations to geographical factors has become important for public health experts. This study was carried out to provide the distribution maps of the geographical pathology of Malaria in Iran wi...

Malaria Elimination Program: Absence of asymptomatic malaria and low parasitic in endemic area of Rudan district, Hormozgan Province, Iran

Introduction: Malaria is a major global public health problem and a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many countries. Malaria elimination is the common goal of World Health Organization and the health system in Iran. Following a decline in malaria cases in recent years, the malaria elimination program, technically supported by the WHO, has initiated since 2009 in Iran. In order to suc...

Some Representational and Ecological Aspects of Evolvability

In this brief position paper I highlight a number of issues relevant to the evolvability of arti cial life systems. These issues became apparent over the course of my doctoral research which involved studying the evolutionary dynamics of a Tierra-like system (Taylor 1999a). The rst two issues (multifunctional phenotypic components and semantic closure) relate to the representation and function ...
